John WarterTIDYWith sadness we would like to announce the passing of John Warter TIDY formerly of Felcourt, between Lingfield and East Grinstead and latterly of France and then Copper Beeches Care Home in Uckfield. He passed peacefully after a brief period of illness in the early hours of 26/06/2026 aged 86.
Born on 27/05/1940 in Beddington, South London he worked for the same corporation all of his working life, in various construction companies owned by the Trafalgar House Group. He worked abroad for a long spell, working on projects in the Caribbean, Oman, Iran and several African countries taking his family along with him from 1974 to 1979. He was one of the last British people to leave Iran in 1979 as war broke out and was interviewed on television to tell his story of almost not getting out. He retired in 1997 as Director of Finance of TH Technology and moved to his beloved rural France with his wife to spend his retirement tending his land, eating fabulous food and drinking top-notch red wine. He moved back to the UK in 2025 for health reasons, to be nearer family.
He leaves behind his wife Ginny (Janette) TIDY, also at Copper Beeches Care Home and his two daughters Samantha and Alison, their husbands, and four grandsons, Olly, Dylan, Fletcher and Raylan.
As per his wishes he is being directly cremated, without a funeral service.
There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday 1st August from 12:30pm at The Greyhound Inn, Lingfield. All who wish to pay their respects and share stories are welcome.
