TOMMY CAPELNottingham Forest stalwart Tommy Capel died at the age of 87 in October 2009.Capel, who signed for a club record £14,000 from Birmingham City in 1949, scored 72 goals in 162 appearances for the Reds.He averaged 18 goals a season from 1949-53, playing inside-left alongside Colin Collindridge and the legendary Wally Ardron.In the 1950-51 campaign he bagged 24 goals (Ardron hit 38) as the club won the Third Division South title.In 1954, Capel and Collindridge were transferred to Coventry City in one of the biggest deals of the close season.Capel, who also played for Manchester City, Chesterfield, Halifax and Heanor Town, served in the Marines during the Second World War.He carried on playing until 1962, finishing his League career with 120 goals from 276 appearances.He continued playing locally past his 50th birthday, at the back, with Padstow in the Spartan League while working at Trent Concrete on Colwick industrial estate.
