I have a lot to thank John Turrill for. As a failed civil engineering student from Nottingham university I presented myself at the offices of the county Highways department in October 1972. “The Assistant County Surveyor will see you now”, said the clerk. I was shown into his office, and after a brief interview John Turrill appointed me “Temporary Technician” at a salary of £1,080 pa. I subsequently retook my exams, graduated, qualified as a chartered engineer and later set up my own very successful consulting practice, all thanks to the opportunity he gave me. I never had the chance to say “Thankyou”.
