My thanks to John who, with his wife Nita, put me up when I first arrived to work for the Forestry Commission in South Wales in 1985. As this was my first posting as a forester I didn’t know what to expect but their kindness and good humour were very welcome and much appreciated.

We worked closely for the next 10 years, mostly in Afan Forest District where John was the Foreman. He always provided much support and advice in this role. Several FC reorganisations later our roles changed but it was always a pleasure whenever our paths crossed. I will always remember John as a very kind and much respected colleague and friend, RIP.

I first met John in 1968 when working with the Forestry Commission at Cymmer Forest and we regularly worked together until John’s retirement. He was a lovely man who gave me good advice and valuable support over the years, particularly with his involvement in the ‘Crucial Crew’ project. RIP my friend
