My Dad Alan Walters was a big fan of, amongst many other things, the work of another Alan: the Alan Parsons Project. I grew up listening to Eye In The Sky, Tales of Mystery And Imagination, and Turn of a Friendly Card etc. In July, a week before Dad's 80th and final birthday, Parsons released a new solo album, From The New World. And it is as good as any of the APP albums (and in fact better than some).
Dad would have loved it.
Growing up, Parsons listened to the Dvorak symphony of the same name on his father's record player, and 'always fancied doing my own version of it with modern rock instrumentation.' This album is not that - apparently he still plans to do it - but on this album is 'Goin' Home', a song based on the Largo from that symphony (you'll know it as the 'Hovis tune', a fact Parsons wryly acknowledges). With a lead vocal by Alan Parsons himself, it is beautiful and moving, and will forever remind me of that other Alan, my father, who introduced me to the APP and much much more besides.
Rest in peace, Dad, this one's for you.
Goin' Home by Alan Parsons
Goin' home, goin' home
I'm just goin' home
Quiet like sun, still day
I'm just goin' home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Goin' to fear no more
Mother's there, expecting me
Father's waiting too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew
Nothing's lost, all's gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
Goin' to roam no more
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life just begun
There's no break, there's no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Goin' on and on
Goin' home, goin' home
I'm just goin' home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Through an open door
I'm just goin' home
