ChristinaWHALLEYMrs Christina Whalley died on Tuesday, March 30, in the East Lancashire Hospice, aged 81. Christina, better known as Chris, was born in Willesden, London, just a few days before the outbreak of the Second World War. Her parents, Jack and Violet Cronshaw, moved back to Jack’s home village of Clayton-le-Moors with Chris just one week old, along with her 14-month-old brother Jack. Chris married her late husband Roy Whalley in 1960. They went into business together when they bought a newsagent’s shop on Whalley Road in Accrington, a few doors up from the Castle public house. They would own further shops in Blackburn before they both retired from the paper trade in 1990, moving to Spain, where Roy died in 2011. Chris returned to Clayton in 2013, where she enjoyed the company of friends and neighbours while also keeping in touch with her friends in Spain via social media. She leaves a son, Philip, a brother, Jack, and a niece, Lorraine. Her funeral will take place at Accrington Crematorium on Monday, April 12 at 10.20am. Family flowers only, please, although Chris would be happy for you to remember her by a donation to the East Lancashire Hospice or to an animal charity. Funeral director: Oswaldtwistle Funeral Services.
