MaureenWILLIAMSWe sadly report the passing of Professor Maureen Williams PHD, FJMU, she died peacefully
at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital of Heart failure… the heart that shone so brightly
in so many ways.
From her childhood in Wordsworth Street , Liverpool 8 to being Pro Chancellor of John
Moors University to Vice Chair of the Liverpool Health Authority, to the deputy chair of the
Government investment programme NWDA, Maureen also was chair of the Small Lottery
Fund and worked in many countries with the Council of Europe. She was a stalwart of the
Voluntary Sector and touched so many lives in her caring superb intellectual way.
From Kazakhstan to Buenos Aries from South Africa to Finland she spread her gentle
knowledge to all of us in a way that people understood Human Rights, Democracy and the
Rule of Law. Which she believed was the right of all nations.
In Liverpool her charity Merseyside Development Foundation supported and enabled many
young people to reach their potential. With her sister she founded the St Helens Woman’s
Aid and pioneered many of the standard procedures we know today including working with
violent men.
One of her passions was Science Fiction and it was a great pleasure and personal
achievement to push through the unique JMU Robotic Telescope which was designed and
constructed here in Merseyside and now giving many thousands of children world wide the
opportunity to look at the universe in all its magnificence.
Maureen will be sadly missed, she was a force of nature, a polymath and the dearest of
friends to so many people around the world.
