WILLIE POLLANDCelebrating the life of former Hearts defender Willie Polland, who died aged 75.He played 254 matches for Heart of Midlothian FC, as right back and centre half, joining in 1961 from Raith Rovers, whom he had helped finish fourth in the league in 1956-7.At Hearts, his honours included a League Cup Final victory over Kilmarnock in 1962, while glamour matches included the Fairs Cup, playing against Union Royale St.Gilloise, Internazionale Milan, Lausanne-Sports, Valerengens and Real Zaragoza, as well as Hearts’ appearance in the New York Soccer League in 1964.He returned to Raith Rovers in March 1967 and won promotion to the first division with them, before a broken leg – the first of series of injuries – kept him out for some time.He retired at the end of the 1969-70 season, and ran a building firm and a pub in his home town of Armadale in West Lothian.
