John CharlesWINTERWINTER On 21st February 2012, peacefully at Treliske Hospital, John Charles Winter aged 88 years, Organist Emeritus of Truro Cathedral. Loving husband of Angela, much loved dad of Nicholas (deceased) and stepdad of Rachel. A service of Thanksgiving for John's life will take place at St Gluvias Parish Church, Penryn on Thursday 8th March at 2pm, followed by interment at Budock Churchyard. Family flowers only but donations in lieu if desired to be shared between the St Gluvias Church Choir Fund and Cornwall Animal Hospital and may be given by retiring collection or c/o the Funeral Director Kingsley Tresidder Trelendor 1 Victoria Place Ponsanooth Truro TR3 7EZ

A marvellous man and piano teacher for me at Truro cathedral school. Leaving me with the life long mantra “Slow practice means fast progress”.

Had the pleasure of being a chorister, along with my brother Peter, at the Cathedral in the mid to late 60's. Mr. Winter (or Charlie as we called him when he was not in earshot!) was a perfectionist and on the odd occasion we messed up during a service we could hear him up in the organ loft venting his displeasure, Once the service was over it was a race to get changed and out of the vestry door before he caught up with us. Luckily he had to play for quite a while after the service so us choristers won. Victory was only short lived because the next morning at choir practice we would suffer by having to get the part right before moving on. Happy days though and I'm very sad to hear of a great musician passing. He was amazing at playing the piano as well. Our loss is heaven's gain. Rest in Peace and thanks for the education.

I'm playing Britten's ceremony of carols for the first time. I haven't heard it since I sang them at Truro Cathedral back in 1965-ish. So I looked John Winter up on Google.


I remember lifts back to school in his Triumph Herald, and turning over the pages up in the organ loft.


He certainly held us to high standards, but I have only fond memories.
