JeanWOLSTENHOLMEWas born in Widnes on Christmas Day, 1927, and died in Manchester just after her 95th birthday on January 9, 2023. The third of five children of George Joseph Shaw and Hilda Taylor, she was an amazing woman of the Greatest Generation who as a teenager worked as a glassblower making landmine detonators. At 20 she met the love of her life, James Wolstenholme, at a NAAFI tea, and followed him, a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Manchester Regiment, around the world for ten years before settling down to raise her family. A lover of sudoku and quiz shows, a dedicated Girl Guides Brown Owl, and a lifelong member of the Trefoil Guild, Jean touched all who knew her with kindness and love. She taught her children lessons of love and acceptance, of duty and commitment, of sacrifice and hard work. But above all love. Jean Wolstenholme did not have a privileged life, but she did have a rich one. As a wife and mother, sister and grandparent, friend and community leader, she gave the most of herself and asked the least in return. She is survived by her Son, Keith Wolstenholme of Hr. Blackley, Daughter Avril Wolstenholme and Son-in-law Paul Morrow of Prestwich, Daughter Helen Wolstenholme and Son-in-law Mark Britt of Cary, NC, USA, Grandchildren Alexander Wolstenholme-Britt of Washington, DC, USA and Samantha Wolstenholme-Britt of Cambridge, MA, USA, Sister Barbara and Brother-in-law David Whitley of Rainhill, and Sister Violet and Brother-in-law Richard Brooklyn of Natal, South Africa. A funeral service will be held at the Blackley Cemetery Chapel on February 2, 2023 at 2pm, followed by interment. Condolences and flowers may be sent to Co-op Funeralcare, 11 Victoria Avenue, Blackley, M9 6RA. Tel 0161 795 3400.
