A brief history of our company.
Our company Bishop’s Funeral Services was originally founded in 1890 by Henry Bishop. He in turn passed it down to his two sons Jack and Chummy. Jack’s son Nicholas then managed it until his retirement in 2001.
It was at this stage that Deirdre Cargen our current proprietor purchased the business. Deirdre is a former aircraft mechanic who worked on helicopters and fixed wing aircraft in the Womens Royal Navy Service.
When her father died she realised that it was time to switch careers. She had seen for herself that it was vital that the bereaved received first class care. In order for this to happen the funeral director needed to have empathy with the families and time to take them through the necessary funeral arrangements step by step.
Deirdre managed to get an apprenticeship with with a local company where she gained the experience and knowledge required in the funeral profession.
Bishop’s Funeral Services is located in Old Town in Chard and we are very proud that it still operates from it’s original premises. The first thing Deirdre did having purchased the business was to carry out extensive refurbishments to bring the premises up to modern day standards.
