Blue Monday 2022

Blue Monday takes place on the third Monday in January every year, with this year being Monday 17th January. It is known as the most depressing day of the year, thanks to the ending of the festive season and subsequent return to normality, failure keeping up with New Year’s Resolutions, cold dark nights and the arrival of post-Christmas bills.

Though there is some controversy surrounding Blue Monday, there is no doubt that January can be a tough month to get through. Christmas is over, it’s still cold and dark and for many people there’s a longer than usual wait for payday.

Here are some ways to beat the blues this January:
  • Try Something New
January is a time for new beginnings, so what better time to try something new? You could learn a new language, take up a new hobby, arrange to go to a restaurant you’ve never tried before - the possibilities are endless.
  • Be Your Best Self
Broken your New Year’s Resolution already? Don’t be discouraged - you’re only human, and as long as you’re trying to be better, then you haven’t failed. Think about the reasons behind the broken resolution - maybe you set too high a goal, in which case you just need to make it more achievable.
  • Set a Savings Plan
If you find yourself struggling with money this January, set up a savings plan so you’re not in the same position next year. A little work now can make all the difference.
  • Spend Time with Loved Ones
After seeing so much of our loved ones during the festive season, January can seem lonelier than usual. Get together with family or friends for a catch up, or just make the effort to call or text someone you love.
  • Find Something to Look Forward To
Book a holiday, organise a day trip or meal out, or plan a gathering with friends. Having something to look forward to can make you more hopeful, and therefore improve mental health.
