Social activities to help combat loneliness

Most people struggle with loneliness at some point in their lives. One way to combat loneliness is to join a regular activity with others, which allows you to socialise as well as trying something new, or maybe even furthering one of your existing hobbies.

Here are some activities you can take up to help combat loneliness:

Evidence suggests that volunteering is as beneficial to the volunteer as the organisation they are helping. Volunteering allows you to socialise as part of a team while helping others, and as many charities ask for volunteers you can pick one that is important to you. Another benefit of volunteering is that it doesn’t cost you anything but your time.

The act of walking in the countryside for pleasure is called rambling, and is growing increasingly popular in the UK. It is a perfect group activity, combining fresh air, connecting with nature, exercise and socialisation. Head to to find your local group.

Church groups

It’s worth checking to see if your local church has any groups going. Many churches host community groups, as well as their own groups such as mum and baby groups.

Hobby groups

Hone a skill while socialising with like minded people by joining a local hobby group. There are numerous websites available to help you find a group in your area, just search “local hobby groups” to find something to suit you, whether it’s dancing, arts and crafts, board games or a book club.

Local classes

Joining a class will enable you to learn a new skill while making new friends. You could choose something you’re completely new at, or work on becoming better at an existing skill. It’s a great excuse to try something you’ve always wanted to do. There are so many classes available, such as painting classes, exercise classes and cooking classes to name a few.

There is something here for everyone, so get out there and see what’s happening in your local area that you could take part in. If you’re nervous about trying something new on your own, see if a friend or family member will go with you.
