If there is anything good to come out of this last year and a half, it’s that it has taught us that there are so many different ways that we can stay in touch with our loved ones. At a time when we were forced to stay apart, we took to our phones and our laptops in order to keep conversations going.

But did we really learn to listen to each other? This year the Samaritans are encouraging people to not only stay in touch, but to become better listeners.

What is Samaritans Awareness Day?

Every year in July, the Samaritans hold local events alongside a national campaign in order to raise awareness that the Samaritans are available to listen to anyone, regardless of what it is you are struggling to get through. Held every year on the 24th July, this date signifies that they are available 24/7 for anyone that needs them.

This year they are asking people to get involved and to pledge on social media to become a better listener. Many people are already aware that they could call the Samaritans, but often they would be more likely to open up if they had a friend or family member who was just happy to listen. By becoming a better listener you can help people around you to open up, and you can improve your relationships at the same time.

The Samaritans suggest making one of the following pledges on 24th July for Samaritans Awareness Day:
  • I pledge to listen without being distracted
  • I pledge to listen without interrupting
  • I pledge to check in with my loved ones more often and ask them how they really are
If you take a look at the official Samaritans Awareness Day page they offer some tips on how to stick to those pledges, and there’s even some downloadable images for you to use on your social media.

And remember, whatever you're going through, you can call the Samaritans free any time, from any phone, on 116 123.
