Summer is fast approaching, the longer days and warmer weather are perfect for dusting off your bikes and going for a ride. As well as being an excellent form of exercise, cycling can also improve our mental health. Here are some benefits of cycling you may not know about:
An excellent form of aerobic exercise, cycling can help to strengthen your cardiovascular system, improving heart health, as well as lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. Cycling regularly can help you to manage your weight and improve your muscle tone.
Cycling is a low impact exercise, meaning it puts less stress on your joints than other forms of exercise such as running. It is a great way to strengthen your lower body, as well as your core, which will improve your stability and balance in the long run.
Studies have shown that regular exercise is a great way to improve our mental health, as engaging in physical activity releases those feel-good endorphins, reducing stress, anxiety and depression.
Spending time outdoors while cycling can also have this effect, as exposure to nature has been linked to improved mood and lower stress levels.
Taking up cycling as a hobby can be an opportunity to meet like-minded people and build new relationships by joining a cycling club or looking for group rides in your area. You can also cycle with family and friends, participating in rides together.
Like any form of exercise, engaging in cycling regularly can help to improve your sleep quality. The physical exertion combined with fresh air and reduced stress levels contributes to better sleep.
Aerobic exercise such as cycling has been shown to have positive effects on cognitive function, helping to improve memory, attention and overall brain health.
Regular cycling can help to boost your stamina and improve your overall energy levels, meaning you will find yourself with more energy during the day, and less likely to suffer from fatigue.
As well as all of the physical and mental benefits, choosing cycling as a form of transportation helps to reduce carbon emissions, promoting a greener environment. This helps to save you money on fuel, as well as reducing traffic congestion.
Most importantly, cycling can be a lot of fun, especially when done as a group activity. It suits people of all abilities; you can choose to go on a leisurely bike ride through the countryside, or find a more intense cycle route for a challenge. When cycling, remember to wear protective gear and ensure to follow traffic rules when cycling on roads.
