What is a jubilee?

A jubilee is a celebration of a king or queen’s life and service, which takes place at regular intervals of a monarch’s reign. Each one is associated with a different precious metal; silver (25 years), ruby (40 years), golden (50 years), diamond (60 years), sapphire (65 years), and platinum (70 years). The Queen is the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee, which marks 70 years of service.

When is the Platinum Jubilee?

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations are taking place throughout the year, culminating in the Platinum Jubilee Central Weekend, a 4 day bank holiday weekend taking place from Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June.

Jubilee celebrations traditionally include fetes, feasts, fireworks and parades, street parties, royal tours and the lighting of beacons.

Here are some of the events taking place for this year’s Platinum Jubilee celebration:

The Queen’s Birthday Parade, Trooping the Colour, will take place on 2nd June in London, a display of military pageantry which has marked the official birthday of the British Monarch for over 260 years.

There is a long tradition of celebrating Royal Weddings, Jubilees and Coronations with the lighting of beacons, which will continue at the Platinum Jubilee with the Platinum Jubilee Beacons ceremony on 2nd June.

The Platinum Party at the Palace will take place on 4th June at Buckingham Palace, a night of musical tributes from the world’s biggest entertainers.

The Platinum Jubilee Pageant will be held on 5th June, where performers will tell the story of the Queen’s reign through a pageant with four acts, with a “River of Hope” procession made up of 200 silk flags emulating a moving river.
