So sad to hear the news about Syd, He was a wonderful friend during my time at Bentley, always made the day so much brighter. Miss our many chats and later letters about the Ashes. My deepest sympathy to Norma, Steve and Paula

I am writing on behalf of my brother and I, Gill and Mark Slevin, who were coached by Syd for years, but were also mentored by him as a close friend. He was always there for us in times of need, we ran thousands of miles together on Sunday mornings, battled through cross-country and track training and racing together. I also worked at Rolls-Royce with him. He was a kind, strong and wonderful man, with an amazing sense of humour, who we will never forget. Lots of love to Norma, Steve and Paula at this difficult time. We are sorry we can't make it to his funeral, as we both live abroad now, but we will be there in spirit. May Syd be racing with Ron Hill and the other fellow superb athletes who were his friends and rivals.
