Susan WeylanREADERIt is with deep regret that we announce the death of Susan Weylan Reader, aged 80. She was born in Farnborough on 25th March 1942, and died on Sunday 18 December 2022 in Exeter at the age of 80. Susan Reader was part of the Howitt/Hare family from Newark. Frank Hare (a Quaker), and was the Chairman of Jutland Amalgamated Trawlers out of Hull. Consequently, they were involved in shipbuilding, with links to the Belvedere Shipyard. At the time, they built a large Steam Trawler, which was named and launched by (Lady Shirley), after Susan's mother, Shirley. This vessel gained further notoriety for sinking a U Boat (U111), before it was itself lost at sea close to Gibraltar. The Howitts are best known by Mary Howitt, the author - friend of Dickens, translator of Hans Christian Andersen, neighbor of Tennyson, with Queen Victoria as a patron; but in her time were best known for TC Howitt's involvement in design/architecture for the Odeon cinemas, and civic buildings in Nottingham and Birmingham (Baskerville House, etc). She and her close family retain the Howitt crest and ring. Susan's father died in service in Italy during the war, when Sue was 18 months old. Her mother remarried, and had one son, Nick. The family settled in Devon (Exmouth). Susan was educated at Lowther College at Bodelwyddan Castle in North Wales, before working in London for a US steel company. After marrying, she spent time in Zambia with the family before returning to the UK. She had a lifelong love of horses, and competed several times at the national carriage trials at Windsor. Later on, she returned to her family roots in ships - and for the last 40 years she was the owner of the Retreat Boatyard in Topsham, Exeter. She lived in Woodbury (previously Abbotskerswell, Plymouth and Exmouth). She was a freeman of the City of London and member of the Shipwrights Guild. She is survived by husband, David; son Simon, and daughter, Kate; and three grandchildren (Max, Polly, and Eve) A small family funeral will take place near Exeter at Woodbury Parish Church on the 20th January 2023. Personal acquaintances would be welcome.
