Yoga, with its combination of movement, breathing, meditation and mindfulness, has long been thought to help improve mental health when practised regularly.

What is yoga?

Yoga is a form of low impact exercise for both the mind and body, involving making various poses, known as asanas, which work by stretching your muscles, while utilising breathing techniques. There are many different types of yoga, some focus on relaxation and meditation, while others focus on strengthening the body.

Yoga was believed to have originated in India and can be traced back 5000 years, though it only became popular in Western countries from the 1970s. The main aim of practising yoga is to connect the mind, body and spirit, and is therefore greatly beneficial to our mental health.

Who can do yoga?

The many different forms of yoga means there is something for everyone. For example, chair yoga is perfect for those who struggle with mobility or have balance issues.

Yoga is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels, as it is a gentle form of exercise. Many people believe you have to be flexible to be able to do yoga, but this is not the case; in fact practising yoga regularly can help to improve your flexibility.

Studies have shown that practising yoga can reduce stress hormones in our bodies, while releasing endorphins to help decrease anxiety and improve our mood. The focus on breathing in yoga can help to reduce anxiety and stress, helping you to calm your mind.

Yoga has also been shown to improve sleep habits, improving both quality of sleep and the amount of sleep people get. Practising yoga can also help to fight fatigue and energise you, as well as improving cognition and focus.

As you become more confident practising yoga, this can also improve your self esteem and make you more confident in yourself.

All of this combined means that practising yoga regularly is a great way to try to improve your mental health, and has even been shown to help people to manage depression.

Practising yoga also has many physical benefits, such as increased flexibility and strength, and improved balance, memory, and heart and brain health. It is an excellent exercise for building core strength and improving your posture. You don’t need a lot of equipment, just a yoga mat, and you can choose to go to yoga classes or practise in the comfort of your own home. There are many apps and YouTube channels dedicated to practising yoga.
