We close charitable collections every day, after they've been available for people to donate in memory for five weeks. Over the last five weeks, closed collections on Funeral Notices have quietly channelled many thousands of pounds to causes that mattered to the people remembered. The money is already with the charities and is being put to good use. Our blog showcases some of those recent collections, highlighting the great work you do in encouraging families to include a charitable collection with their funeral notices.
Douglas Macmillan Hospice - £12,340.20 raised (+£2,644.84 Gift Aid)
Funeral Director: Isobel Whittaker Funeral Service
Why it mattered: More than £12,000 collected on one notice! When the cause is closely tied to a loved one’s care, families can get extraordinary support. Clear signposting, updates, and easy sharing are key. Gift Aid alone added over £2,600 at no extra cost to donors, with 35 people choosing to donate.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association - £1,741.10 raised (+£295.79 Gift Aid)
Funeral Director: Westcountry Funeral Services
Why it mattered: Just five donors made this possible. A handful of high‑value gifts can transform a collection.
St Oswald’s Hospice , Newcastle - £1,599.08 raised (+£373.93 Gift Aid)
Funeral Director: W.S. Harrison
Why it mattered: A mid‑sized group of 15 donors, supported by Gift Aid, quickly passed four figures. Early sharing and a clear “in lieu of flowers” ask often lifts the average donation.
Ovarian Cancer Action - £1,417.72 raised (+£260.48 Gift Aid) from 21 donors (19 with Gift Aid)
Funeral Director: Graham J Sullivan
Why it mattered: Excellent Gift Aid uptake shows the difference opting in to Gift Aid makes to the charity.
Amyloidosis UK - £1,298.51 raised (+£275.81 Gift Aid) from 28 donors
Funeral Director: W.S. Harrison
Why it mattered: Many people contributed to this collection, raising vital funds for a lesser-known charity. Collections have a huge impact on smaller charities.
Sean's Place, Sefton, Liverpool - £640 from 19 donors
Funeral Director: Richard and Shannon Jenkins
Why it mattered: This is an excellent example of a collection for a local cause. Gift Aid is unavailable on this collection as it's not for a registered charity; however, the funds collected will make a huge difference to the local community.
In-memory donations matter to the family, charities, and a loved one's legacy. They turn remembrance into immediate support for the causes that shaped a person’s life, delivering funds where they’re needed most.
Your guidance is often the difference: when funeral directors signpost the option clearly and include a simple call to give in lieu of flowers, families and friends respond, Gift Aid boosts totals at no extra cost, and charities feel the benefit straightaway.
We’re sincerely grateful for your support in helping people collect some amazing amounts for charity. Please keep the conversation going, ask whether they’d like to include a charitable collection in the notice in memory of their loved one, and help them share it, so that each tribute not only celebrates a life but also makes a tangible difference in their name.
